1820 GREAT BRITAIN George III MAUNDY PENNY > 1 PENCE Sterling Silver 3 YEAR TYPE
    Description
This is a beautiful, low mintage, sterling silver,
    "Maundy Penny"
    or
    "One Pence"
from Great Britain. It was struck at the Royal mint in 1820 during the last year of the reign of King George III. He was the King who got to read the American
    "Declaration of Independence"
    .
The small silver 1 through 4 pence coins of Britain, now generally thought of as
    "Maundy"
coins, were struck for normal circulation until this year, 1820. Although the first
    "Maundy Sets"
of all four coins were put together during the reign of George III. At the Maundy Thursday ceremony, the poor would be given the number of Pence equaling the age of the monarch in these small silver coins.
There were three quite different obverses and five different reverses used for the 1 Pence during the long reign of George III. This portrait of George III and the reverse was only used on the last 3 dates.
Weight: 0.47 Gram, 12 Millimeter, .925 Silver. Maundy Mintage: 7,920.

    "Hanoverian Dynasty"
    that took over from the
    "Stuarts"
when Queen Anne, who had been pregnant 17 times, died childless in 1707. They still reign under the adopted name,
    "House of Windsor"
. George eventually went what was diagnosed as
    "Mad"
but he actually suffered from a blood disease called
    "Porphyria"
    .

    The Coin:
A very nice little coin, it has seen a few hands and has some small scratches, but it has generally been well cared for. It is still fully original, and has never been cleaned. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
